Within his first two years at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Scott Speedy earned the Chartered Life Underwriter and the Chartered Financial Consultant designations.
Scott had spent the first five years of his career literally on the road with Andersen Consulting as a consultant in systems design, analysis and implementation. Although he was on the management track, he was ready for a career change when he talked with Managing Director David Knox. “I wanted to be in an entrepreneurial situation,” he says.
Scott applied the same thorough approach that characterized his career change to his search for the right organization to join. Before deciding, he interviewed at several other financial services organizations. A number of factors influenced his decision to join Northwestern Mutual. Scott was invited to shadow another representative, and he visited a client builder meeting, where Financial Representatives discussed their month’s activities and goals. He was also impressed by Northwestern Mutual’s longevity, reputation and tradition of services. He knew Northwestern Mutual had “a great reputation,” he says, but adds, “You don’t realize how well the established business crowd knows this company until you’re here.”
A former Belmont basketball player, Scott initially called on other alumni at Belmont, along with people in the consulting business. “They referred me to others,” he says. “I grew up here, so I worked my personal network. I’ve learned you can’t put a price tag on the equity of your existing contacts. Looking back, I made the right decision. The opportunity absolutely outweighs the risk.”
Scott’s advice to new representatives: “You have to know this is what you want to do. This is your business, and you’ve got to give it time to grow. You have control of your career, there’s unlimited growth potential and you don’t have to wait for an annual review from your employer.” |
