Roy started his career with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network after graduating from college. After interviewing with the Nashville recruiting director on campus, he was invited to meet with several established financial representatives to ask them about their careers. They assured Roy that he faced years of hard work building his business, but stressed the rewards of working with clients over the years to meet their changing financial needs.
Roy decided this was the career he wanted to pursue, but he had to fight for the opportunity. “They didn’t think I was ready for the career, but I convinced them to give me a chance to prove myself,” he says. Roy proved himself by setting clear goals and hitting them immediately. “I knew basic economics, but I had to learn about insurance and investments. My mentor, John Hill, emphasized the importance of getting in front of a certain number of people each week, and he guided me on how I should handle myself.”
Roy chose to focus on working with his peers, rather than pursue his family’s more established friends. “My clients who were struggling 14 years ago are now established in their careers, and they help me continue to build my business,” he says. Roy worked hard to build a solid client base and provide excellent service to his clients. As a result, he has surpassed his annual goals each year for the last 14 years.
Roy’s advice to new financial representatives: “Trust the system and believe your mentors.”
